Whale Watching with Maui Fun Charters

whale watching boat MauiWhale watching during the winter months in Maui is a must do adventure. Humpback whales make the journey from the cold waters of Alaska to Maui’s warm waters to breed and give birth. We whale watch in protected waters of The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary for the best viewing and the highest concentration of whales.

We have 3 vessels to choose from:

Marjorie Ann

During Maui’s whale season, our fishing charters almost always seem to come with the best whale watches. The midday sunshine and whale activity start to peak just as we are finishing up the fishing trip so we decided to make our vessel available for private afternoon whale watches on any day we have a fishing trip in the morning.
The Marjorie Ann is a very stable vessel with lots of shade on her back deck and plenty of rail space for looking out for turtles, dolphins and the famous Hawaiian humpback whales that crowd the waters just outside Kihei and Maalaea harbor. The Marjorie Ann is Coast Guard certified for 20 passengers but we keep the group size limited to 10 for passenger comfort.

Bring your own snacks and drinks. (alcohol ok) While the Marjorie Ann has a very well shaded back deck, we still recommend bringing sun protection like a hat and sunscreen. A better-than-cell-phone camera might be nice to have but it is also nice to just enjoy the view without having to fuss with equipment on the trip. (Buy the postcard back at the gift shop.) Binoculars can help with spotting the whales and also checking out the coastline from a different perspective.

Usually does fishing trips in the morning but also available for whale watching in the early afternoon. Up to 10 passengers.

Maalaea harbor is conveniently located 15 – 20 min. north of the Kihei / Wailea / Makena resort areas, and 20 – 30 min. south of the Lahaina / Kaanapali resort areas. One of the best places in the world for whale watching, Maalaea Maui is home to one of the highest concentrations of north pacific humpback whales in the world.

The calm waters off of Kihei, Wailea, and Lahaina are a favorite of whales and whale watchers alike. Although the whale watching on Maui is seasonal, you can almost be guaranteed to see several whales during the peak of our whale watching season from Dec. 15 till May 15th.

Several other whale watching tours operate out of the Kihei, Maalaea, and Lahaina areas during whale watching season but most of them take between 50 and 140 people. If you are interested in a more intimate whale watching experience, then we just might have the boat for you.
